Matloff specializes in functional analysis and abstract probability theory. He currently focuses on machine learning, data science and parallel computation. He is a former appointed member of IFIP Working Group 11.3, an international committee concerned with database software security, established under the United Nations. His book Statistical Regression and Classification: from Linear Models to Machine Learning (CRC Press, 2017), was the recipient of the Ziegel Award in 2017.
