Society and Technology

Computer scientists can play a pivotal impact on society. Faculty with an interest in society and technology pay particular attention to the social and political consequences of computers, smartphones, social media and other artifacts and technologies. Many of us are also interested in the arts. We are concerned with questions such as how technology influences who has what power, how the costs of technology are spread across society, how individuals spend their time, how healthy and happy they are, who is surveilled and why and the health of our environment. We address these issues in papers, talks, classroom teaching and the arts.
