Advising for New Students

First year students should take the CS Placement Exam before registering for courses in their first quarter. Visit our CS Placement Exam webpage to find more information.

Newly Admitted CS and CSE Students

  • Step 1: Complete Aggie 101
  • All incoming freshmen and transfer students must complete Aggie 101. This online program will provide essential information and introduce you to key resources at UC Davis. Aggie 101 will be accessible starting mid-May for first year students and mid-June for transfer students.
  • Step 2: Complete Aggie Advising Modules in Canvas
  • All incoming freshmen and transfer students must also complete the Aggie Advising Modules in Canvas. During this module you will review how your AP/IB or community college credit counts at UC Davis and learn how to select courses and build a balanced schedule for your first quarter. You'll also find resources and tips to help you navigate the university, explore your interests, and ensure your first quarter is a success. More information will be provided after Aggie 101 opens.
  • Step 3: Attend an Advising Session
  • First Year Students:

The Computer Science Undergraduate Advising team will be hosting weekly virtual advising workshops for incoming students from early July to early August. You must complete Aggie 101 and your Aggie Advising Module in canvas before attending a workshop.

    Workshops will cover:
    - First quarter schedule
    - Course placement based on placement tests, AP/IB credit, etc.
    - Introduction to advising in CS and resources available
    - FAQs

Please note, due to the high volume of CS and CSE majors, one on one appointments will not be available during the summer for first-year students.

    Transfer Students:

Your personalized schedule and advising checklist will be uploaded to OASIS. If you have additional questions that were not covered in Aggie 101 or Aggie Advising, your major advisors will be offering appointments throughout the summer. An appointment is not required. Due to the high volume of CS and CSE majors, transfer students are limited to one appointment.

    How to Schedule an Appointment:
    - Visit the appointment system and login with your UC Davis ID and Passphrase
    - Select "Computer Science" and then select "Undergrad Advising" for the calendar to see our availability. You will not be able to see our availability if you have not completed Aggie 101 and your Aggie Advising Modules. Transfer students, please note that appointments will not start until late July.
    - Once you have confirmed your information, you will be shown a calendar with available appointments. Choose the day and time that works for you. You may need to click forward to additional weeks for open appointments depending on demand.
A confirmation email will be sent to your UC Davis email account. All appointments will be held via Zoom.
  • Step 4: Attend Aggie Orientation
  • Sign up for Aggie Orientation. This five-day program is your opportunity to start building community networks of support, find resources, and begin your life on campus.
