The paper, authored by Ph.D. student Krishna Kumar Singh, visiting researcher Utkarsh Ojha and assistant professor Yong Jae Lee, describes an algorithm the team developed that was able to identify, disentangle and layer different parts of generated images by associating random codes with different parts of the image.

Computer Scientists Create Programmable Self-Assembling DNA

Computer scientists at the University of California, Davis, and the California Institute of Technology have created DNA molecules that can self-assemble into patterns essentially by running their own program. The work is published March 21 in the journal Nature.

Professor Prem Devanbu Named 2018 ACM Fellow

Professor Premkumar Devanbu was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He is one of 56 fellows being recognized for “outstanding accomplishments in computing and information and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community” this December.

Devanbu was specifically recognized for his contributions to using software data and meta-data to improve software tools and processes. He will formally receive his award at ACM’s annual Awards Banquet on June 15, 2019.

UC Davis Wins Amazon’s 2018 Alexa Artificial Intelligence Challenge

Ph.D. student Gregory Rehm awarded NIH F31 Fellowship

Ph.D. student Gregory Rehm, co-supervised by ECE Professor Chen-Nee Chuah and Professor Jason Adams from UCD School of Medicine, has been awarded the NIH F31 Fellowship Grant to pursue his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science at UC Davis. Greg’s dissertation research will focus on developing a machine learning model for improving accuracy and timeliness of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) diagnosis, and enable early prediction of clinical deterioration in ARDS patients.

Aditya Thakur receives 2018 DECOR Award

Professor Aditya Thakur (Computer Science) and Professor Maureen Kinyua (Civil and Environmental Engineering) were one of three recipients of the 2018 Dean’s Collaborative Research (DECOR) Award. The DECOR program was initiated this year by Dean Curtis and facilitated by the College’s Research and Library Committee to catalyze new research ideas by supporting collaborations between faculty who have different areas of expertise.

Cindy Rubio González, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, has received a $537K NSF CAREER Award titled “Understanding and Combating Numerical Bugs for Reliable and Efficient Software Systems”. The research aims at developing new testing and analysis tools to find frequent and impactful numerical bugs, to propose fixes for these bugs, and to optimize numerical software.
